This Basic Handgun course is a good starting place for anybody who has never had formal training with a handgun. This course has something for just about everyone. Starting with basic handgun safety, then going in-depth with subjects ranging from defining different types of guns to available gear and recommended training to suit your reason for buying a gun.
[Important: If you do not already have a handgun, please contact your instructor for course recommendations prior to signing up. You might do better in the New Shooters class]

What Will You Learn?

The classroom portion of Basic Handgun will use nationally celebrated training materials by the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) to present fundamental concepts related to all things handgun. Then, we will meet at the range for some show & tell and skill building.

Basic skills developed and topics covered at the range will include the following:

  • Safe gun handling
  • Trigger control
  • Basic handgun marksmanship
  • Defensive accuracy
  • Clearing malfunctions
  • Gear & gadget review
  • Handgun maintenance

[note: Actual course time may vary depending on average student experience and desired training goals.]

What to bring

Required for each Basic Handgun student

  • Great attitude, willingness to have fun, and eagerness to learn!
  • Head gear: Hat, ball cap, visor, or other brimmed head-wear to protect you from the sun and potential flying/floating debris.
  • Eye protection: Shooting glasses, prescription glasses, sunglasses, or other suitable tempered protective eyewear.
  • Hearing protection: Electronic ear muffs are preferred. If you don’t have electronic, I have some loaners available.
  • Footwear:  Closed-toed, comfortable shoes. We will be standing a lot. Bring something comfortable, with a thick enough sole to protect your feet while walking on expended brass, gravel and/or dirt.
  • Ammunition: At least 100 rounds for each gun you plan to fire. ( note: In light of the current shortage … bring what you can. We’ll work with it!)
(If you have issues obtaining ammunition, contact me for more options; at least 3 days prior to class.)

Hint … If you do not already own protective gear, and you do not want to buy everything right away, please let me know.  I have a limited supply of loaner gear available.

recommended for Each Basic Handgun Student

  • Equipment: Any additional equipment you may have (speed loaders, extra magazines, holsters, etc.)
  • Caffeine-free drinks: We will be working outside. Regardless of the weather, you will need to be drinking to stay safe and healthy. I will have some water available. If you want to drink anything besides water, I highly recommend avoiding caffeine. Caffeine is a diuretic, and can contribute to dehydration.
IMPORANT: Limit or avoid caffeine intake for 12hrs prior to training outdoors to prevent dehydration and heat related injuries.
  • Sunscreen or Rain gear: We will have limited cover and you will be exposed to the weather during all exercises.
  • Stadium pads/camp chairs: I have sufficient folding chairs for all students. They are similar to those available at outdoor weddings or military functions. We won’t be sitting much, but if you would like something more comfortable, please bring stadium pads, or your favorite camp chair.
  • Snacks: You will be burning a lot of calories. You might want a few extra nibbles of something to get you through.
