This Home Defense course does not require the use of a firearm! You will learn how to incorporate firearms into a complete home defense plan. However, firearms are only a portion of any home defense plan. You might choose other non-lethal options. We will discuss those too.

Much of the information for this class supports protecting your home whether you have a gun or not. Topics include the importance of having a plan, how to the security of your house, and the legal use of force (should you need it).

While “Home Defense” does not require the use of a gun, if you’ve been thinking about a gun for home defense, we will go over your options and your responsibilities with handguns, shotguns, and rifles.

[note: Actual course time may vary depending on average student experience and desired training goals.]

What Will You Learn?

The classroom presentation will make use of nationally celebrated training materials to present fundamental concepts relating to home defense. Then, we will meet at the range for some show & tell and skill building. For those who do not wish to fire a gun, we can cover less-than-lethal options too.

Basic skills developed and topics covered at the range will include the following:

  • Developing a personal and home protection plan
  • Self-defense firearms basics
  • Defensive  shooting fundamentals
  • Less than lethal options
  • The legal use of force
  • Violent encounters and their aftermath
  • Gear and gadgets

What to bring

Required for each Home Defense student

  • Great attitude, willingness to have fun, and eagerness to learn!
  • Head gear: Hat, ball cap, visor, or other brimmed head-wear to protect you from the sun and potential flying/floating debris.
  • Eye protection: Shooting glasses, prescription glasses, sunglasses, or other suitable tempered protective eyewear.
  • Hearing protection: Electronic ear muffs are preferred. If you don’t have electronic, I have some loaners available.
  • Footwear:  Closed-toed, comfortable shoes. We will be standing a lot. Bring something comfortable, with a thick enough sole to protect your feet while walking on expended brass, gravel and/or dirt.
  • Ammunition: At least 100 rounds for each gun you plan to fire. ( note: In light of the current shortage … bring what you can. We’ll work with it!)
(If you have issues obtaining ammunition, contact me for more options; at least 3 days prior to class.)

Hint … If you do not already own protective gear, and you do not want to buy everything right away, please let me know.  I have a limited supply of loaner gear available.

Highly recommended For Each Home Defense Student

  • Equipment: Any additional equipment you may have (speed loaders, extra magazines, holsters, etc.)
  • Caffeine-free drinks: We will be working outside. Regardless of the weather, you will need to be drinking to stay safe and healthy. I will have some water available. If you want to drink anything besides water, I highly recommend avoiding caffeine. Caffeine is a diuretic, and can contribute to dehydration.
IMPORANT: Limit or avoid caffeine intake for 12hrs prior to training outdoors to prevent dehydration and heat related injuries.
  • Sunscreen or Rain gear: We will have limited cover and you will be exposed to the weather during all exercises.
  • Stadium pads/camp chairs: I have sufficient folding chairs for all students. They are similar to those available at outdoor weddings or military functions. We won’t be sitting much, but if you would like something more comfortable, please bring stadium pads, or your favorite camp chair.
  • Snacks: You will be burning a lot of calories. You might want a few extra nibbles of something to get you through.
